Tax Refund Estimator
Refund or tax bill? Enter your taxable income, credits, and what has already been withheld to see where you will land on April 15.
How this calculator works
The estimator applies the 2026 federal brackets to your taxable income, subtracts your credits, then compares the result to what you have already paid through withholding or estimated payments. If you paid more than you owe, the difference is your refund; if you paid less, that is what you owe. State taxes are not included.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between taxable income and gross income?
Taxable income is gross income minus deductions (like the 2026 standard deduction of $16,100 single / $32,200 married) and pre-tax contributions. Enter your taxable income here; if you only know your salary, use the federal withholding calculator instead, which does that step for you.
When will I get my refund?
Most refunds are issued within 21 days of e-filing. The fastest way is to e-file with direct deposit; paper returns take much longer.
Why might my actual refund differ?
This estimator uses simplified 2026 rules. Actual results change with itemized deductions, self-employment tax, capital gains, state tax, and credits like the earned income credit that are not modeled here.
